Letterhead Printing – Top tips for effective Letterheads

These days we may conduct much of our business by email or online but letterheads are still widely used and hugely important to most businesses. Many customers like and even depend on written correspondence. Written or signed letters also add a more personal touch to communications or business transactions. As they bear your brand they also advertise your business. That’s why you should always put plenty of thought into the design of your printed letterheads.

It’s all in the details
It might sound obvious, but don’t get so carried away with designing a great letterhead that you forget the essentials. Business name, address, contact details including email and web address are absolutely essential, as is your logo. Some companies include social media addresses like Twitter or Facebook but make sure your printed letterhead doesn’t look cluttered. Its main purpose is as a border for your letter’s content.

Use a good design and artwork programme
Ask any designer and they’ll tell you they can easily spot anything produced using platforms such as Word or Pages. Programmes like Indesign and Illustrator were specifically created for design and allow much greater flexibility for both type and graphics. Any good online printer will have downloadable templates you can use for your artwork so you know that what you supply will be print ready.

Keep your brand consistentYour logo and brand identity is just as important on your printed letterhead as on any marketing. Your brand should be easily recognisable but not overbearing. Compliment slips should reflect the same details and design as your letterhead and they both should sit perfectly beside your business card design too.

Use vector logos
Logos or other graphics should be in vector format. Photoshop files in high res (300dpi at the printed size) are fine but vector or line art images will always look sharper.

Think about a continuation sheet
If some of your correspondence is likely to be more than a single page in length, have continuation sheets printed. These shouldn’t have the details you need on your letterhead but should have the same design, look and feel. It’s much better to use continuation sheets than blank pages and you should never use your letterhead again for a second page.
